Furze Cose Plantation

The woodland at Furze Cose Plantation sits just inland from Bridport, offering a proper stretch of legs through mixed forest without the crowds you'd hit at bigger nature reserves. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - tall conifers mixed with broadleaf trees, decent walking paths that don't require navigation skills, and enough green to make you feel properly away from it all.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not dramatic or heavily managed, just genuinely peaceful. You're looking at anything from a quick 30-minute amble to a couple of hours if you want to properly explore the network of trails. The paths are generally well-maintained, though muddy patches are inevitable after rain - standard woodland behaviour. Bring proper boots.

Families with older kids will find it worthwhile, though younger children might get bored if you're not stopping every five minutes to spot birds or collect leaves. There's something satisfying about an unrushed woodland walk, and the proximity to Bridport means you can easily combine it with coastal time if you're on a longer trip.

If you're staying at Seadown Holiday Park or Newlands Holiday Park nearby, this makes a logical inland break from beach days. Free admission, no facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's not Instagram-worthy or particularly famous, which is precisely why it's worth knowing about.
