Fur Tor

The granite outcrop rises abruptly from moorland about five miles south of Okehampton, and on a clear day the view across Dartmoor from the summit is genuinely worth the slog. Fur Tor itself is fairly modest - a rocky peak with proper weathered stones, nothing dramatic - but the surrounding landscape gives it real presence. The walk in is straightforward moorland, boggy in places, which adds to the sense of actually being somewhere remote rather than just ticking a box on a guidebook.

This is walker territory rather than casual stroller country. You'll need proper boots, an understanding of moorland navigation, and ideally a map or GPS - phone signals are patchy out here. Allow a couple of hours there and back from the nearest car park near Willhays. It's free, naturally. The plateau views get better the clearer the weather, so morning visits tend to trump afternoon when clouds roll in from the south.
