Fron-Wen

The walk up Fron-Wen from Presteigne is straightforward but properly rewarding - you're looking at a modest peak that doesn't demand serious hiking boots, just decent legs and an hour or so of your time. The summit itself sits at around 380 metres and gives you proper expansive views across Mid Wales, the kind that make you understand why people bothered climbing Welsh hills in the first place.

It's the sort of walk families with older kids will actually enjoy without complaint, and it's close enough to town that you won't spend half your holiday in the car. The path is well-trodden, though it can get boggy after rain - go in dry weather if you can help it. On a clear day the visibility is excellent; on a grey one it's a bit underwhelming, to be honest.

What makes Fron-Wen work is its proximity to Presteigne itself, so you can build it into a proper day rather than make it the whole event. The two local holiday parks - Hush Hush Glamping and Presteigne Holiday Park, both rated five stars - are within striking distance, so you could easily base yourselves nearby and tackle the walk as part of a longer Mid Wales trip. Neither park will demand you rough it if glamping isn't your thing anyway.

Allow a couple of hours from Presteigne for the full round trip, including a breather at the top. It's free, obviously - it's a hill - and there's no formal infrastructure, so bring water.
