Frogland Copse

A small woodland patch just outside Newport that's easy to overlook but worth a quiet hour if you're camping nearby. Frogland Copse is exactly what it sounds like - a modest forest with paths threading through, the sort of place where you might actually spot a frog if the weather's been wet. Nothing dramatic, but the canopy's proper thick and it offers genuine shelter if the Island's wind picks up, which it often does.

Walkers will find it useful as a leg-stretcher between longer routes, and families with young kids won't feel pressured to make a day of it. The trees are old enough to feel like you've stepped away from the caravan park, yet you're close enough to Newport to grab lunch without a mission. Don't expect signage or facilities - this is just trees, paths, and the occasional burst of bird noise.

If you're staying at The Orchards or Grange Farm, both within four miles, it's an easy diversion. Spring's probably the best time, when the undergrowth comes alive and you've got a real chance of spotting wildlife. Summer can feel a bit dense and airless depending on the day. Free access, obviously - it's a copse, not a theme park.

Honestly? It won't change your week, but it's the kind of place that justifies having a proper walk on an otherwise lazy holiday. Good if you need to burn off restless energy without committing to a full-day trek across the island.
