Froggatt Edge Stone Circle

Standing stones scattered across moorland don't always live up to expectations, but this Bronze Age circle rewards the walk with genuine atmosphere. Seven weathered gritstone blocks remain from what was once a complete ring, positioned on the edge of Froggatt Edge with commanding views across the Derwent Valley towards Chatsworth.

History buffs will appreciate the authenticity - this isn't a reconstructed tourist attraction but a proper archaeological site that's been here for roughly 4,000 years. The stones aren't massive, but their positioning feels deliberate and purposeful against the dramatic moorland backdrop.

Reaching the circle requires a decent walk from any car park, so it's one for families with older children who can manage uneven terrain. The path from Curbar Gap works well, though you'll need proper walking boots as the ground can be boggy.

What makes this worthwhile is the combination of ancient history and cracking Peak District scenery. You're essentially getting two attractions for the effort of one walk. The edge itself offers some of the finest views in Derbyshire, and rock climbers often add to the spectacle below.

Perfect for combining with a stay at one of the nearby sites like Chatsworth Park Caravan Club or North Lees Campsite. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip, and pick a clear day - the views are half the point.
