Foyers Church

The small kirk at Foyers sits right on the shore of Loch Ness, which is reason enough to visit - you get the loch views without the monster-hunting crowds of Urquhart Castle. It's a proper Highland church, simple and honest, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The real pull here is the setting rather than the building itself. Walking down to it feels like stepping back in time, especially if you arrive when the light's soft and the water's calm.

Foyers works best for walkers and anyone doing a Loch Ness circuit who wants to tick something spiritual off the list without a major detour. Families with younger children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's not much to do beyond a look inside and a photograph - but if you're already camped at Loch Ness Shores or Loch Ness Holiday Park, it's absolutely worth the drive down the B862. Allow thirty minutes, maybe an hour if you fancy a walk along the shore afterwards.

The village of Foyers itself is tiny - barely a collection of houses - so don't expect facilities or a coffee stop. Head to Inverness, five miles north, if you need proper food and shops. The real magic here is simply being on the loch's edge with minimal fuss. Combine it with a walk to the nearby Foyers Falls if the weather holds and you've got a proper Highland morning sorted.
