Foxhill Wood

The walk through Foxhill Wood near Lockerbie is quietly rewarding - nothing flashy, just proper Scottish woodland where you can actually hear yourself think. Ancient oaks, birch trees, and dense undergrowth create that sense of being genuinely away from things, even though you're only minutes from the town.

It's best suited to walkers who don't need everything signposted and explained. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might struggle with muddy paths if the weather's been rough. The woodland isn't vast - you're looking at an hour or so for a decent loop - but that's the point. It's the kind of place where you go to clear your head rather than tick off a major attraction.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could establish, so bring what you need. The forest floor can be boggy in patches, so proper boots aren't a luxury. Spring's lovely when the woodland floor comes alive; autumn's atmospheric if you're into that sort of thing.

If you're based at Hoddom Castle Caravan Park six miles away, Foxhill Wood makes a solid half-day option to break up a longer stay. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's genuine countryside and worth the short drive. The Scottish Lowlands aren't all drama and views - sometimes the appeal is just being under the trees.
