Fox Covert

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination you'd set your sat-nav for, Fox Covert sits just outside Buckingham and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Buckinghamshire forest - mature trees, quiet paths, and the occasional moment of genuine peace. The covert itself isn't vast, but it's well-maintained and the walking routes through it are straightforward enough that you won't need a map, though the light changes through the canopy mean it always feels slightly more interesting than it probably is.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly anyone staying at Embers Camping down at Claydon who fancies a stretch of the legs without driving. It's not dramatic or wild - there are no ravines or ancient viewpoints - but that's rather the point. You get dappled shade, birdsong, and the sound of leaves underfoot. Take a good hour if you're ambling, half that if you're just after a quick circuit.

Bring the kids and they'll manage it fine, though there's nothing to make them leap about with excitement. Dog walkers clearly love it. The best time is honestly early morning or late afternoon when you've got the place more or less to yourself and the light works properly through the trees.
