Forestside Plantation

Walking into Forestside Plantation feels like stepping properly off the beaten track, even though Ambleside is just down the road. This is working forest rather than manicured woodland - conifers tower overhead, the ground soft with decades of needles underfoot, and the air smells exactly as a forest should. You'll find yourself on quiet trails that wind through dense planting, with occasional breaks where the canopy thins and you catch glimpses of the surrounding Lakeland fells.

It's the sort of place that appeals to walkers wanting a gentler alternative to the full-on mountainside grind, and families with kids old enough to enjoy a proper stomp without needing constant entertainment. The trees offer real shelter too, which matters when Lake District weather turns damp - you can walk here when the high ground is properly sodden.

There's no obvious visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, and it reads as genuinely free access, though you'll want to respect it as working land. Allow a couple of hours to get the most from it rather than rushing through. Early morning visits are worth planning for if you can manage it - fewer people, better light filtering through the conifers, and you might spot wildlife.

If you're camping at Sykeside or glamping at Crossgate just outside Ambleside, Forestside slots nicely into a day that also covers the lake and town. It's different enough from the high fell experience to break up a week's walking, without requiring the drive to somewhere completely new.
