Force Crag Mine

You'll find yourself climbing into proper mining country the moment you head up the fell from Borrowdale Valley towards Force Crag. This isn't a polished museum experience - it's a working landscape where you can actually see the slate workings and stone buildings that miners left behind when they were extracting graphite and slate from the mountainside. The National Trust maintains it, but there's no visitor centre or gift shop nonsense, just the raw bones of industrial heritage at around 600 metres elevation.

The walk up takes a good hour depending on fitness, and honestly, it's steep in sections. What you get for that effort are the ruins of mining buildings, old workings to peer into, and views that stretch across Borrowdale and towards Derwent Water. History buffs will appreciate the 19th-century mining operations still visible in the landscape. Families with younger kids might find the walk more appealing than the actual site - the destination feels more rewarding if you're already interested in industrial heritage rather than casual fell-walkers looking for a quick stroll.

Free to visit, and allow half a day including the walk from Borrowdale. Go in decent weather because the path gets slippery and visibility matters for both safety and the views. If you're staying at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or one of the other sites within 5 miles of town, this works as a proper morning expedition that doesn't require driving far. Pair it with a walk around Derwent Water afterwards and you've got a solid day's outing.
