Foldshaw Ridge

From the trig point at 419 metres, the views across Wharfedale stretch for miles in every direction. Foldshaw Ridge sits just south of Ilkley, offering one of the most accessible high-level walks in this corner of the Yorkshire Dales without the crowds that plague the more famous peaks.

The ascent from Ilkley takes about 45 minutes through a mix of moorland and rocky outcrops. It's a proper little climb - nothing too taxing, but you'll know you've earned those panoramic views. On clear days, you can pick out the distinctive outline of Pen-y-ghent to the north and the sprawling valley floor dotted with stone walls below.

Walkers and photographers get the most from this ridge, particularly those staying at nearby sites like Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Brown Bank Caravan Park. The terrain can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Early morning visits reward you with the best light and fewer people sharing the summit.

Unlike some Yorkshire peaks that feel like motorway service stations on busy weekends, Foldshaw Ridge maintains a sense of solitude. It's well worth combining with a longer walk along the ridge towards Dick Hudson's if you've got the energy. Allow two to three hours for the round trip from Ilkley town centre.
