The trees are dense enough that you lose the car parks and ice cream vans quickly, which is the whole appeal.

It's straightforward woodland tramping on decent tracks. You're looking at anything from a gentle forty-minute loop to a couple of hours if you explore properly and don't rush. The trees provide shelter in decent weather, though it can get boggy after rain - wear something with grip. Children will find it fine for an hour or so; it's not exactly thrilling if they're after adventure playgrounds, but decent for teaching them what an actual forest looks like rather than a manicured country estate.

Historically minded types might appreciate that these inclosures (that's the proper New Forest spelling) date back centuries - they're fenced-off sections where timber was managed for naval use. You won't find interpretation panels spelling this out, so you either know it or you don't.

The real strength is proximity. Stay at Long Meadow Campsite or Ocknell just down the road, and this works as a morning walk before heading to busier parts of the New Forest. It's free, ungoverned, and utterly lacking in twee charm. That's precisely why it works.
