Foel Gurig

The walk up Foel Gurig won't take you long, but it's a proper little workout for the legs. This moorland peak sits just outside Llanidloes in Powys, rising 1,891 feet and offering the kind of views across Mid Wales that make you forget you're not in somewhere more dramatic. The ascent is steep in places - no messing about with gentle gradients here - but once you're up top, the expanse is genuinely worth the huffing and puffing. On a clear day, you can see far enough to make the scramble feel justified.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a family stroll where toddlers potter along picking flowers - this is proper hiking territory, and the terrain can be boggy underfoot depending on rainfall. Allow a couple of hours there and back from the start of the route. The peak itself is exposed, so wind and weather can roll in quickly, which is both a thrill and a reminder to check the forecast before heading out.

It pairs well with other walks across the Llanidloes area without feeling like you've committed your entire holiday to getting up hills. The moorland character and raw, unspoilt feel are what make this corner of Wales worth bothering with. No facilities at the summit, so bring water.
