Deildre Hill

The walk up Deildre Hill rewards you with proper views across the Powys moorland - the kind of place where you can actually see how big Mid Wales really is. It's not a massive peak, which means you won't spend half the day trudging uphill, but the climb is real enough that you feel like you've earned the summit.

From the top you get sight lines stretching across rolling terrain towards Llanidloes in the valley below. On a clear day it's the sort of vantage point that makes sense of the landscape - the way the roads wind, how the settlements sit in the folds. The path itself is straightforward moorland walking, boggy in places after rain, firmer when it's dry. Allow a couple of hours return from Llanidloes, depending on your pace.

Historians and serious walkers will get more from this than casual strollers. It's not a views-from-the-car job - you need to walk it to appreciate it. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of rough ground will manage fine. Toddlers and elderly relatives less confident on uneven terrain might find it wearing.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby camping spots - Red Kite Touring Park or Glangwy Farm Camping are closest - this makes a solid morning walk before heading to explore Llanidloes proper or moving on to other Powys hills. It's the kind of walk that fills a gap perfectly in a park holiday week. Nothing fancy. Just solid hill walking.
