Foel Fras

Standing at 944 metres, this mountain delivers proper views across Snowdonia without the crowds that swarm its famous neighbours. Foel Fras sits at the northern end of the Carneddau range, offering experienced walkers a challenging day out with panoramic rewards that stretch from Anglesey to the Snowdon massif.

Getting to the summit requires commitment - it's a solid 5-6 hour round trip from most starting points near Llanfairfechan, with steep ascents that'll test your legs. The paths can be boggy in places and weather changes fast up here, so proper kit is essential. But reach the top and you'll understand why locals rate this higher than some of the busier peaks.

This isn't one for casual family strolls or anyone uncomfortable with sustained uphill walking. Serious hikers and peak baggers will love it though, especially those working through the Welsh 3000s challenge. The sense of space and wildness up here feels genuinely remote.
