Foel Dduarth

Standing 1,506 feet above the Conwy Valley, this craggy summit delivers one of North Wales' finest coastal panoramas without the weekend crowds that plague Snowdon. The climb from Llanfairfechan takes about an hour and a half up a well-defined path that zigzags through bracken and heather before reaching the rocky top.

What makes Foel Dduarth special is the view. On clear days you'll see right across to Anglesey, with the Menai Strait glinting below and the entire Snowdonia range stretching out behind you. The summit itself is a proper rocky outcrop - not one of those disappointing grassy humps - and there's enough space for a good picnic if the wind isn't too fierce.

Serious walkers will knock this off in a morning, but families with older kids (say 8+) should allow most of the day. The path gets steep in places and can be slippery when wet. Weather changes fast up here, so pack layers even on sunny days.

From any of the holiday parks around Llanfairfechan like Three Streams Glamping or Craiglwyd Hall, it's an easy drive to the starting point. Perfect for breaking up a week of beach days with something more adventurous. Just don't expect mountain cafe facilities - bring your own supplies and leave nothing but footprints.
