Foel Caethle

The walk up Foel Caethle takes you straight into proper Welsh hill country, with Tywyn sitting below like a toy town on the coast. It's not a massive peak - around 550 metres - but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a gentle stroll. The ascent is relentless and the paths can be boggy in places, especially after rain.

What makes it worth the effort is the view once you're up there. On a clear day you get the Cardigan Bay sprawling out in front, the Snowdonia peaks off to the north, and inland stretches of Ceredigion rolling away behind. The summit itself is fairly exposed, so wind can be a factor - bring layers even if it looks calm lower down.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's a solid two to three hours round trip depending on your pace and which route you take from the lower slopes. Families with young kids might find it a bit of a slog, though determined ones will manage it. The terrain is moorland and grass rather than scrambling, so it's more about fitness than technical ability.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Cambrian Coast or Searivers are within striking distance - this makes a proper half-day adventure without needing to drive miles. The peak doesn't charge admission and there are no facilities up there, so carry water and snacks. Early morning visits tend to offer the clearest views before cloud rolls in off the bay.
