Foal Burn Head

Foal Burn Head isn't much of a name, is it? But climb to this peak above Moffat and you'll understand why the local shepherds bothered naming it at all. The walk's straightforward enough - moorland paths that gain height steadily without being a slog, and when you reach the top, the Southern Uplands roll out in all directions. On a clear day you can see proper distance. On a grey one, which is most days, it's moody and atmospheric in the way Scottish hills do best.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a peak that punches above its weight in terms of views or drama, but it's honest work - maybe two hours up and down from Moffat, depending on your pace and which approach you take. The kind of walk that clears your head without requiring kit and navigation skills beyond what most people have. Families with older kids would manage it fine, though younger ones might find the moorland a bit samey.

If you're based at Riverside Holiday Park or Howslack Farm just outside Moffat, Foal Burn Head makes a solid afternoon outing. Combines with other walks in the area without eating your whole day. No fees to worry about - it's access land - so you can head up whenever the weather looks half decent. Don't expect rock scrambles or dramatic ridges. What you get is space, air, and views across Dumfries & Galloway that justify the climb.
