Flight of the Langoustine

A life-sized bronze langoustine frozen mid-leap up the side of a building - that's your first proper look at Flight of the Langoustine in Sussex. It's the sort of thing that makes you stop mid-walk and actually look up, which rarely happens in modern life. The sculpture sits on the Hove Plinth, part of an ongoing public art project that rotates commissions through the space, so what you'll see depends entirely on when you visit.

It's not a traditional gallery experience - there's no entrance fee, no gift shop, no one asking if you've filled in a feedback form. You simply find yourself standing in front of it, usually with a few other people who've also noticed something odd and beautiful happening above street level. The artist's intent becomes clearer the longer you look: there's something absurd and joyful about a shellfish achieving flight.

Worth the stop if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Foot of the Downs or Eastern Sands are both within walking distance - and you're already pottering around Brighton. It takes five minutes, tops. The real draw is how it breaks up the usual streetscape rather than being a destination in itself. Don't expect a full afternoon's entertainment, but as a quirky interlude during a seaside trip, it delivers.
