It's not a dramatic destination - no waterfall moment or panoramic lookout - but rather a place for a decent two-hour ramble with some decent natural interest. Birdwatchers rate it highly, particularly in spring and autumn migration season. Families with kids of eight and up will enjoy the trails, though younger ones might find the terrain a bit rough underfoot in places.

Access appears to be free, and there's parking near the main entrance. Timing-wise, come early morning or late afternoon if you want to avoid the school holiday crowds from nearby Chesil Beach Lodge Park and East Fleet Farm. The paths can get muddy after rain, so proper boots beat trainers.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Chesil Beach Lodge is particularly well-rated - Fleet Wood makes an excellent morning or late-afternoon outing. You're close enough that it doesn't eat into a full day, but far enough removed from the beach-and-amusement-arcade circuit to feel like genuine countryside.
