Fishmoor Reservoir

The water stretches out flat and wide, surrounded by moorland that feels properly remote for somewhere just outside Blackburn. Fishmoor Reservoir is a working water body rather than a manicured attraction, which means it has that authentic Lancashire edge - you're looking at where people actually come to fish and walk, not a staged Instagram moment.

What you get here depends entirely on what you want. Walkers will find decent paths around the perimeter with views across the water to the hills beyond. It's the sort of place where a two-hour circuit feels substantial without being exhausting. Birdwatchers take it seriously - there's proper wildlife through the seasons. Fishermen obviously know what they're doing here; if you've got a rod and a permit, this is proper territory.

Kids will get an hour maybe, possibly two if they're the type who enjoy spotting birds or skimming stones. It's not a playground destination. There's no café or visitor infrastructure that I could find, so come prepared with your own supplies.

Free access as far as I can tell, though that can change. The best approach is morning visits when the light catches the water nicely and you'll dodge the afternoon crowds. It works well as a half-day excursion while based at Northwood Caravan Park or Wigwam Holidays Ribble Valley - both are close enough for a morning outing without eating into your main plans. Bring proper footwear; the ground gets boggy after rain.
