Firth Hide

The walk out to Firth Hide takes you across open marshland that feels properly remote, even though Herons is just down the road. It's a birdwatching spot, straightforward as that - a simple wooden structure where you can sit and watch whatever's moving through the wetland below. The views are wide and quiet, the sort of place where you notice small things: a distant heron, the way light hits the water, the wind across the reeds.

This is for patient types. Bring binoculars and a field guide if you're serious about spotting things. Kids will get restless after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into birds. The walk itself is flat and easy, no real climbing, but can get boggy after rain - proper waterproof boots aren't optional here.

It's free, as far as we can tell, and there's no set hours posted anywhere. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and birds are most active. Allow an hour return from the nearest car park, though you could stretch it to two if you're settling in for proper observation.

Fits well with a Romney Marsh holiday. Parkdean Resorts Romney Sands and Herons Park Campsite are both within spitting distance, so you can base yourself nearby and do this as a morning jaunt. It's the sort of spot that rewards solitude rather than crowds - not a destination in itself, but a decent addition to a quieter break in the area.
