Ffridd Ddu

You're looking at roughly 600 metres of Welsh hillside that rewards a proper scramble. Ffridd Ddu sits above Llanfairfechan on Anglesey's southern edge, offering views across the Menai Strait that justify the leg work. The walk itself takes about an hour from the village, climbing through moorland with the mountain air getting proper cold as you gain height.

It's the sort of place that suits walkers more than casual strollers. Families with older kids who don't mind rough terrain will get something from it, but there's no path to speak of and the ground's unforgiving underfoot. The reward is solitude - you won't find crowds here. On a clear day the views stretch toward Snowdonia, though Anglesey's weather is as changeable as anywhere else in North Wales, so timing matters.

Allow a good two hours return if you're taking it slowly and want to sit about at the top. It's free, naturally, and there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of. Llanfairfechan itself is a small coastal town with basic facilities. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Ogwen Bank or Kingsbridge are within reasonable distance - this makes a solid morning's walk without eating the whole day. Go early if the forecast looks decent. This isn't a destination in itself, but part of a proper walking weekend in the area rather than a standalone trip.
