Fforest

The walk up Fforest from Llandovery is steep, fairly relentless, and absolutely worth doing on a clear day. You're climbing just over 1,500 feet, which doesn't sound much until you're halfway up and your legs remind you otherwise. The peak itself sits on open moorland - bare, windswept, and commanding views across the Tywi Valley and beyond into the Brecon Beacons. On a good day the sight line stretches for miles. On a bad day you'll be in cloud, which rather defeats the purpose.

This is proper walker territory. Not a casual stroll - you need decent boots and a bit of fitness. The path is well-trodden enough, but there's minimal infrastructure up top, so go prepared. Allow two to three hours round trip from the car park, more if you're taking your time or stopping to soak in the views. Families with younger kids might find it a bit much, though confident walkers aged ten and up should manage it fine.

It's free to visit, naturally - it's a Welsh peak. The nearest reliable spot to stay is either Erwlon Caravan & Camping Park or Riverside Pods, both sitting about three miles away near Llandovery. Either makes a sensible base for exploring this corner of Carmarthenshire. The town itself is charming enough for a coffee stop before or after. Early morning visits pay dividends - fewer people, clearer air.
