Fennyfold Playing Fields

Fennyfold Playing Fields is a proper working nature reserve just outside Nelson, the sort of place locals know about but most visitors skip past on the way to somewhere else. The fields themselves are open grassland dotted with woodland patches - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant for a walk if you're staying at one of the holiday parks in the area.

What you actually get here is a chance to stretch your legs without crowds. There's a network of paths through the reserve where you might spot rabbits, various birds, and if you're lucky, the odd heron near any water features. It's the kind of low-key spot where families with young kids can let them run about without worrying about traffic, and walkers passing through the area can kill an hour between activities without feeling like they've wasted time.

Timing matters though - go early morning or late afternoon if you want any real wildlife action. Midday in summer it can feel a bit exposed and empty. The reserve is free to access and there's no formal opening hours to speak of, which means you can turn up whenever suits your holiday schedule.

If you're based at Pendle View Holiday Park or Higher Grange Glamping, both within five miles, Fennyfold works well as a gentle filler activity rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a proper walk up Pendle Hill or a visit to Gawthorpe Hall if you want something with more meat on it. On its own? It's pleasant enough, but don't rearrange your itinerary for it.
