Far Comb Hill

The walk up Far Comb Hill from near Harrogate rewards you with one of those Yorkshire vistas that makes you understand why people keep coming back to this part of the Dales. It's not mountaineering - the summit sits at 310 metres - but the moorland approach is genuinely pleasant, especially in late spring when the bracken's unfurling. The top gives you a proper sense of being somewhere, with views stretching across rolling farmland and heather. On a clear day you can see for miles.

This is walker territory, frankly. Not a scramble, not dramatic, but the kind of modest fell that older walkers and families with decent boots will enjoy. You're looking at around 90 minutes return from the car, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the summit. There's nothing at the top itself - no café, no shelter - so bring weather-appropriate kit and perhaps a flask.

The location works brilliantly if you're based at one of the local glamping spots. Breaks Fold Farm is just over a mile away, and Windmill Retreats even closer, so you can tackle this as a morning expedition and still have the afternoon free. If the weather turns sour, it's not the sort of hill to battle through rain - better to wait for decent visibility.

The real value here is straightforward: a genuine moorland walk that doesn't demand special equipment or months of training, starting from sensible distance from Harrogate. It's proper North Yorkshire walking without the effort required for higher peaks. Worth adding to your itinerary if you're already in the area.
