Eye Holes

The two gaping holes in the limestone cliff face at Eye Holes are genuinely striking - you'll spot them from a fair distance away if you know where to look. They're cave entrances, properly cavernous, and the local legend is that they're named after an old woman who once lived in them. Whether that's true or just good storytelling, I can't say, but the story sticks with you.

Getting in close is where it gets interesting. The caves themselves are accessible but narrow - this isn't a sprawling underground system, more a serious rocky scramble. Bring proper footwear and a torch. The walk to reach them from the nearest parking in Carnforth is straightforward enough, though the final approach is steep and involves some scrambling over loose stone. It's the sort of place that rewards walkers and keen cavers far more than casual day-trippers expecting an easy stroll.

Solo explorers and families with older kids who don't mind a bit of rough terrain will find it worthwhile. Young children or anyone uncomfortable with heights should probably give it a miss.

The surrounding Yorkshire limestone landscape is proper dramatic too. Worth combining with other walks in the area to make a full day of it.
