The castle sits on a tidal island just off the Argyll coast, looking properly dramatic against the grey Scottish sky. Getting there means timing the tide right - you can walk across the causeway when the water's out, which adds a bit of adventure to what might otherwise be a straightforward visit. It's been a stronghold since the 13th century, and you can feel that weight of history walking through the ruins. The walls still stand in places, and the views back towards Oban and the Sound of Mull are excellent, especially on a clear day when the hills sharpen up.

This works best for people who enjoy a bit of exploration on foot and don't mind uneven ground. The castle itself is open to wander around freely - no guides, no roped-off sections, just you and the stones. Allow a couple of hours if you're thorough, less if you're just poking about for photos. Check the tide times before you go; getting stranded isn't the end of the world, but it's not ideal either.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Creagan Station Tourers is particularly well-regarded - this works as a decent half-day outing from Oban. It pairs well with a walk along the seafront or a visit to the whisky distillery if the weather turns sour. The castle's free to access, which is a bonus, though the approach can be muddy after rain.
