Ewe Hill

The walk up Ewe Hill rewards you with views across the Cheviot Hills that stretch for miles in every direction. It's not a dramatic peak - no scrambles or exposed ridges - but the climb is steady and proper satisfying. From the summit you can pick out the distinctive shape of Cheviot itself to the west, and on a clear day the Northumberland coast comes into view towards the east.

This is walkers' territory. The route suits anyone with moderate fitness and decent boots, though families with younger children might find the incline tedious after a certain age. Allow a couple of hours return from the nearest parking spots, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. There's nothing up there in terms of facilities - no cafe, no shelter - so bring water and something to eat if you're staying a while.

Nearby Alnwick makes a logical base, and both River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and Tranwell Farm Holidays sit within striking distance. If you're combining this with other Cheviot walks - and you should - you'll find the area packed with decent routes. The hill itself doesn't take long to do, so it works well as part of a wider day out. Go for clear weather; the views on a murky day are genuinely disappointing, and there's little else to tempt you to the summit.
