Hepburn Castle

A crumbling red sandstone ruin perched on a rocky outcrop near Alnwick, Hepburn Castle is one of those Northumberland fortifications that rewards the effort to find it. Built in the 14th century, what remains is essentially a pele tower - a squat, brutal defensive structure designed to repel Border raids. The walls still stand reasonably intact, which is more than you can say for plenty of its medieval neighbours.

You'll need proper walking boots to get here. The castle sits on private land, so check access before you head out, but from the right angle the approach winds through moorland that feels properly remote despite being only a few miles from civilisation. History buffs will spend twenty minutes studying the stonework and imagining what it must have been like during the worst of the Anglo-Scottish troubles. Kids under twelve might find it underwhelming - it's not Alnwick Castle with its manicured grounds and gift shop. But if you're walking in the area, it's a proper detour worth taking.

Staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Riverside Wooler Holiday Park is closest at under five miles - you could string together a decent Northumberland walking holiday. Combine it with longer rambles across the moors, a visit to Alnwick itself for decent shops and restaurants, and you've got several days' worth of exploring. Best done between April and October when the weather plays ball and the paths aren't boggy.
