English Heritage - Saxtead Green Post Mill

A proper working windmill that actually grinds flour - that's what makes Saxtead Green different from the postcard versions you see elsewhere in Suffolk. The mill sits on a gentle rise above the village, its white weatherboarded tower and long tail vane turning when the wind's up. You can walk round the outside free of charge, and the view across the green and surrounding farmland is straightforward and honest rather than showy.

Inside, if you catch it open, you'll see the machinery that's been doing its job since 1781. The grinding stones, the gears, the pulleys - it all makes sense once you're standing underneath the sails watching them work. Kids find it genuinely interesting because there's something satisfying about seeing how things actually function. Adults tend to spend longer than expected photographing the light through the machinery.

East of Woodbridge, it's an easy stop if you're exploring the Suffolk heritage trail, though the opening hours are limited so check ahead. The nearby Savage Glamping and The Croft Campsite both sit within spitting distance, making this a sensible inclusion if you're staying put for a few days rather than touring constantly.

Realistic time: thirty minutes if you're just circling the exterior, an hour if you go inside and poke around properly. Go when there's a decent wind - the mill looks rather static and frankly a bit sad when the sails aren't turning.
