English Heritage - Orford Castle

You're standing in front of a seriously chunky 12th-century keep - the sort of building that makes you realise medieval builders weren't messing about. Orford Castle is essentially one massive polygonal tower plonked on the Suffolk coast near Woodbridge, built by Henry II in 1165 and still intimidatingly intact after nearly 900 years.

Climbing the spiral stairs gets your legs working, but the views across the marshes and towards the coast are genuinely worth the huff and puff. The keep is surprisingly well-preserved inside - you get a proper sense of how these places actually functioned, from the kitchen to the chambers. It's not enormous, so two hours covers it comfortably, though if you're the type to read every information board, add another hour.

Families with children who can manage stairs will find it engaging without being overwhelming. There's enough to explore that it doesn't feel like a rushed tick-box, but it's not vast either. Walkers should time their visit for decent weather since the coastal location means wind is almost guaranteed.

The castle works brilliantly as part of a wider Suffolk exploring weekend - you're well-positioned to visit from Wantisden Park or Run Cottage Touring Park, both within easy striking distance. Pair it with a walk around the surrounding marshland or a trip into nearby Woodbridge itself. Entrance fees apply (English Heritage members get in free), and it's typically open April through October, though checking ahead is wise as hours vary seasonally.
