Enfield Park

The wetland here spreads across former tin mining land, creating something genuinely different from the usual Cornish coastal walks. Bodmin's about 3 miles away if you need supplies, and the reserve sits in that quieter bit of countryside where you realise how much of this county used to look before tourism took over.

What you're walking through is open water, reedbeds, and wet woodland - habitat that's been carefully restored over decades. Birdwatchers get proper excited about Enfield Park. Winter brings visiting ducks and waders; spring and summer are excellent for warblers and dragonflies if you can sit still long enough to spot them. The paths are straightforward and mostly flat, so it's not a punishing walk, though they can get boggy after rain.

Families with primary-school-aged kids will find it engaging for an hour or two - there's something about spotting a newt or watching a heron that keeps them focused. Older teenagers might find it a bit slow unless they're genuinely into wildlife. For serious birders and photographers, though, it's worth a dedicated trip.

The reserve is free to access and you can pretty much turn up whenever suits you. Allow an hour for a gentle loop, longer if you're stopping to watch wildlife. It pairs well with time at either Rosebud Farm Touring Park or Camp De Lank a few miles out - both excellent bases for exploring the Bodmin area without the crush of the coast. Go early morning or late afternoon for the best wildlife activity and fewest other visitors.
