Embleton Quarry Nature Reserve

A former quarry near Alnwick that's been left to nature - and it actually works. The site has flooded over the years, creating a proper little lake surrounded by steep rock faces and regenerating woodland. You get decent views from the rim paths, and the water attracts birds, so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing.

It's free to wander around, though the ground can be boggy and the paths aren't manicured. The main circuit takes about 45 minutes if you're not dawdling. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're the type to get excited about spotting newts and damselflies. Older children and serious walkers will find more to occupy themselves - the quarry faces are genuinely dramatic once you're standing below them, and there's a real sense of industrial archaeology if you look for it.

The reserve works best as a leg-stretcher between other Northumberland activities rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Northumberland Coast Camp just over 2 miles away, it's an easy morning walk. Worth combining with a visit to Alnwick itself - the castle and gardens are only a short drive away and will fill a proper day out.

Best visited in spring or early summer when the birds are active and the woodland flowers are doing their thing. Winter can feel bleak, and the paths get treacherous after heavy rain.
