Elsenham Playing Field

Just outside Dunmow, Elsenham Playing Field is one of those working landscapes that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a proper explore. It's essentially a local nature reserve wrapped around playing fields - part sports ground, part wildlife haven, and genuinely useful for getting a sense of what rural Essex actually looks like beyond the commuter belt.

The space attracts walkers and nature watchers more than families looking for a day out, though kids will be fine pottering about for an hour or so. You get meadow paths, patches of woodland, and the sort of unremarkable but honest wildlife you'd expect - birds, insects, the odd fox at dusk. It's not dramatic, and that's partly the point. This is conservation work in action, not a manicured visitor attraction.

Entry appears to be free and there's no formal opening hours to worry about - it's the kind of place you access on foot from the surrounding area. Allow a couple of hours for a gentle wander, or just twenty minutes if you're passing through Dunmow and fancy some air.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby glamping spots - Dairymeade Farm or Hidden Gem, both excellent - this makes a nice morning constitutional before heading elsewhere. It won't make a holiday highlight reel, but it fills a gap nicely between your accommodation and proper walks in the wider Essex countryside.
