Penzance's most eccentric building sits on Chapel Street like something that got lost on its way to the Nile. The Egyptian House is exactly what the name promises - a Grade I listed townhouse dressed up in full pharaonic fancy, complete with lotus capitals, hieroglyphic patterns, and that distinctive Egyptian Revival style that seized Victorian imaginations. Built in 1835, it's the real deal, not some theme park approximation.

Walking past it stops you dead. The frontage is bonkers in the best way - bright paintwork, carved stone details, and an absolute refusal to blend in with the Georgian terraces around it. You can admire the exterior properly from the street, which most people do. The interior opens occasionally for tours, though your best bet is ringing ahead or checking with the Penzance tourist office in town.

This isn't a major time-consumer. You're looking at ten minutes to gawp and photograph, maybe thirty if you catch an open day and go inside. History nerds and Egyptologists will find it properly fascinating - it's a genuine artifact of 1830s taste and eccentricity. Kids either think it's brilliant or couldn't care less, depending on their tolerance for old houses.

It works perfectly as part of a Penzance wander. You're steps from the seafront and the town's decent galleries and cafes. Stay at one of the nearby parks like Roselands or Polmanter and you're within easy reach. Gaze at it, enjoy the madness of it, then grab a pasty and move on.
