Egypt Centre

Swansea's Egypt Centre sits within the university campus and houses one of Britain's most significant collections of Egyptian artefacts outside London. You're looking at over 5,000 objects spanning from the Old Kingdom through to the Greco-Roman period - mummies, canopic jars, jewellery, papyri, the lot. The displays are genuinely well-curated, with proper contextual information that doesn't talk down to visitors.

The museum itself is compact, which means you won't spend hours here, but that's actually its strength. Two to three hours is the realistic time to allow, and you'll come away having actually absorbed something rather than trudged through endless cases in a daze. Families with children aged eight and up will find it engaging - the mummy displays hold attention, and there's enough interactive material to stop younger ones from switching off entirely.

It's completely free to visit, which is frankly brilliant. Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and it's closed on public holidays. The campus location means parking can be a bit of a faff during term time, so arrive early or consider going mid-week if you can.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Swansea Marina is just two miles away - this makes a solid half-day addition to a coastal break. Pair it with a walk around Swansea Bay or the National Waterfront Museum down the road. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a South Wales trip, it's absolutely worth the detour.
