East Wemyss Den

The caves at East Wemyss Den are proper coastal exploration territory - a scramble down sandstone cliffs to find a series of sea caves carved into the rock face over millennia. You're looking at genuine geological features here, not some polished visitor attraction, which means the appeal depends entirely on your tolerance for muddy paths and scrambling about in confined spaces.

It's the sort of place where you'll spend a good hour picking your way through caves, ducking under rock formations, and working out which passages actually lead somewhere. The sandy beach at the base gives way to caves with names like the Well Cave and the Whin Cave - locals have been exploring these for centuries, and you can see why. The rock formations are genuinely striking, all striped and weathered by the sea.

Walkers and geology enthusiasts will get the most from it. Young children might find it thrilling for thirty minutes, then want to leave. Older kids who don't mind getting a bit grotty will have a proper adventure. The nearest town is Glenrothes, but you're really heading for the Fife coast here rather than anywhere inland.

If you're basing yourself at Silverburn Park or Leven Beach Holiday Park for a coastal break, this makes a solid half-day excursion. It's free and open whenever the tide allows - check conditions before you go, as the caves flood at high water. Bring proper walking shoes, not flip-flops. The path down is steep and slippery when wet.
