Cuinin Hill

The walk up Cuinin Hill from Glenrothes takes you through proper countryside for what's essentially an urban peak. It's not demanding - more of a steady trudge than a scramble - but the views over central Fife once you're up there are genuinely worth the effort. On a clear day you can pick out the Forth bridges and the Pentlands beyond, which gives you a real sense of where you fit in the landscape.

This is the sort of walk that appeals to people who want fresh air and a bit of elevation without needing hiking boots or a packed lunch. Families with kids aged eight upwards will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the trudge tedious. The hill itself isn't particularly dramatic - Fife doesn't do drama - but there's something satisfying about getting to the top and properly seeing the region spread out beneath you.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around Glenrothes - Balbirnie Park is barely a mile away - this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. It won't take more than a couple of hours return, so it fits neatly around other plans. Kingdom Caravan Park and Letham Feus Lodge are also close by if you're basing yourself here for a few days.

The real value is as part of a broader Fife exploration rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a visit to Balbirnie Park's gardens, or use it as a break from the beaches at Leven if you're combining seaside and countryside.
