East Lancashire Railway

The clatter of steam engines and the smell of coal smoke take you straight back to the 1950s the moment you arrive at this restored railway line running between Bury and Rawtenstall. You're climbing aboard vintage carriages, some dating back over a century, and rattling through the Rossendale Valley on journeys that feel genuinely authentic rather than theme-park cosplay.

It's a proper experience if you love railway history or want to show kids what train travel used to be like before everything went electric and sanitised. The route itself is scenic, winding through Lancashire countryside, and the volunteers who run the place clearly know their stuff. You'll spot enthusiasts photographing the engines before departure, and there's a working heritage railway vibe that's refreshingly genuine.

Allow two to three hours if you're making a proper afternoon of it, including time to poke around the workshops and stations. Families with children under five might find the journey a bit long unless they're obsessed with trains, but older kids usually love it. The stations have small cafes and visitor facilities, nothing fancy but adequate.

If you're staying at Burrs Country Park just outside Bury, this is genuinely walkable distance and saves you faff with parking. On a clear day, the views from the higher sections of track are lovely without being spectacular. Worth combining with other attractions in the area rather than making a solo trip, but if you've got transport enthusiasts in the group, it'll absolutely make their day.
