Earsham Village Sign

The village sign at Earsham is the sort of thing you might drive past without a second glance, but stop and actually look at it and you'll understand why locals are rather proud. It's a proper piece of folk art - hand-painted, detailed, and genuinely charming in a way that chain-store village signage simply isn't. The gallery aspect comes from the craftsmanship on display; this isn't mass-produced tat knocked out in a factory somewhere.

Earsham itself sits just east of Bungay in Norfolk, a quiet corner of the Norfolk-Suffolk border that doesn't get overrun with tourists. The sign tells the story of the village itself through its imagery - look closely and you'll spot references to local history and countryside life that give you a real sense of place. It's the kind of thing that works best when you're already in the area rather than as a destination in itself, but if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Wardley Hill Campsite or the rather lovely Dawn Chorus safari tents and shepherd huts just down the road - it's absolutely worth a wander.

You'll spend about ten minutes here, fifteen if you're the type who wants to photograph it properly. Free, obviously. The real appeal is that it's a proper community effort, the sort of thing that would be utterly unremarkable in many English villages but somehow means something when you're taking time to actually notice it. Best visited on an afternoon walk from your campsite, or combined with a pint in Bungay itself.
