Durham Edge

The walk up to Durham Edge rewards you with one of the sharpest views across Buxton and the surrounding moorland - nothing fancy, just proper high moorland scenery that demands respect in bad weather. It's a peak that sits just outside Buxton, making it accessible for an afternoon rather than a full day commitment, though the ascent is steeper than the height suggests.

What you're doing here is straightforward fell-walking on open moorland. The peak itself doesn't offer much in the way of facilities or infrastructure - no café, no visitor centre - so come prepared with water and a decent map. The appeal is in the walk itself and the views that materialise as you gain height. Walkers will find the scramble up proper satisfying, though families with younger children should factor in that it's more serious than a gentle park stroll.

If you're based at Derbyshire Hills Campsite just 1.2 miles away, or any of the other caravan parks clustering around the Buxton area, Durham Edge makes a logical half-day outing. It pairs well with exploring the White Peak's other accessible summits in the region. The moorland can be bleak in November through to March, which sounds like a criticism but actually intensifies the experience. Summer brings the crowds and the midges.

Go early in the day, especially weekends. Parking isn't marked or managed - you'll likely find space on the roadside near the start of the approach. Allow two to three hours for a comfortable ascent and descent, depending on fitness. It's free, naturally.
