Dunach, dun site

The ruins of Dunach sit on a hillside above Oban, and honestly, it takes some commitment to find them. This is a proper Iron Age dun - one of those circular stone fortifications that dot the Scottish Highlands - and what remains is a low grass-covered mound with scattered stone foundations if you know where to look. The view down towards Oban and the Firth is the real draw here, not the archaeology itself.

You're looking at maybe thirty minutes of wandering around, poking at old walls, trying to imagine what life looked like two thousand years ago when this place actually mattered. It's the sort of site that appeals to proper archaeology nerds and keen hikers rather than families expecting something showy. Kids will get bored within ten minutes unless they're the type who enjoy scrambling about on hillsides.

There's no visitor infrastructure, no signage to speak of, and you'll need decent directions or local knowledge to find it. That said, it's free and accessible year-round if you don't mind a bit of a trek. The real value is combining it with a broader walk in the area - Oban Holiday Park and Tanunda Pods are both within three miles, so it works nicely if you're basing yourself there for a week. The coastal scenery around Oban makes this worth a morning's exploration, even if the dun itself is more atmosphere than spectacle.
