Dun Barr Uachdaraich, dun site

There's not much left of Dun Barr Uachdaraich, to be honest - just a grassy mound with some stone scattered about - but that's rather the point. This Iron Age dun, a few miles from Tarbert in Argyll, is the sort of place you stumble upon when you're properly exploring, not when you're ticking boxes.

What you're looking at is the remains of a circular stone fort, probably built somewhere between the 1st and 3rd centuries. The locals would have lived here, defended themselves from here, maybe gathered livestock within those now-invisible walls. Standing on the bump itself, you get views across the surrounding land that make you understand why someone chose this spot in the first place.

It's not a destination on its own. You won't spend two hours here photographing interpretive panels because there aren't any. What you will do is walk across rough grassland, get your boots muddy, and connect with something genuinely old in a way that tidy heritage sites can't quite manage. Walkers and archaeology enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Kids might manage ten minutes before asking for snacks.

Free to visit, no facilities, no set hours - just turn up. Give yourself half an hour including the walk from where you park. If you're staying at Killegruer Caravan Site or Muasdale Holiday Park nearby, it's a decent leg-stretch on a drizzly afternoon. The drive from Tarbert is brief. Worth the detour if you're already in Kintyre? Yes. A reason to visit Argyll on its own? Probably not.
