Dun Ablaich

You'll find yourself scrambling up a hillside near Oban to reach what's left of this Iron Age fort, and honestly, it's more atmospheric than you'd expect from a few crumbling stones. Dun Ablaich sits on high ground with views across the Firth of Lorn, and the walk alone makes it worthwhile even if you're not mad about archaeology.

The fort itself dates back around 2,000 years - it was a broch, one of those distinctive Scottish round towers that dot the Highlands. What remains now are the foundation stones and bits of the outer walls, enough to get a sense of how it was laid out but not so intact that it feels like a museum piece. You can walk around the perimeter and imagine the settlement that once thrived here, defending the coast from unwanted visitors.

This is really one for walkers and history types rather than casual tourists. You won't get a guided tour or any interpretive panels - just you, the ruins, and the landscape. Allow an hour including the walk up, maybe longer if you're taking photos or sitting with a picnic. There's no charge and no facilities, so bring what you need.

It works well as a morning outing if you're staying at Sunnybrae Holiday Park or Argyll Kayaker Cove - both are within easy reach of Oban. Pair it with a walk around the town afterwards, or use it as a warm-up before tackling longer trails in the area. Best visited in decent weather when the views are clear.
