Duke's Hill

The walk up Duke's Hill is a proper little lung-burner, but the effort pays off once you're standing on top looking out across the Harrogate countryside. It's not a massive peak - you're talking maybe an hour's round trip from the car park - but it gives you real views without needing crampons or a mountain guide.

What you get is essentially a viewpoint walk. There's nothing fancy at the summit, no café or visitor centre, just moorland, sky, and if the weather's on your side, sight lines stretching halfway across North Yorkshire. Families with older kids handle it fine. Younger ones might find it a bit of a slog, though the sense of achievement once you've made it does something to their morale.

Timing-wise, allow a couple of hours including messing about at the top taking photos. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring the hiking crowd. The nearby Breaks Fold Farm Glamping is less than a mile away, which makes it dead convenient if you're basing yourself there. Beyond that, Bolton Abbey Estate and Howgill Lodge are both within five miles, so you could work this into a broader moorland walking trip without any bother.

It's free - there's no entrance fee, no ticketing nonsense. Just turn up, lace your boots, and get moving. Worth the detour if you're already in the Harrogate area and fancy something beyond the town's gardens and tea rooms.
