Dubh Chreag

The walk up Dubh Chreag from Crieff isn't long, but it's properly steep in places, and that's rather the point of it. This is a peak that rewards you for the effort - roughly 630 metres of climbing that takes most people between two and three hours up and down, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The views across Perthshire are the real draw here. On a clear day you can see right across to Ben Vorlich and the wider Trossachs, which makes the graft worth every painful quad.

It's a serious walk rather than a casual stroll, so leave the toddlers at the holiday park unless you're the type who carries a kid all the way up. Seasoned walkers and hill folk will find it a solid afternoon out, though nothing particularly technical or dangerous. The terrain is boggy in places and can be properly slippery when wet, so decent boots aren't optional.

Start early if you're based near Crieff - the town itself makes a useful jumping-off point with cafes and shops before you head out. There's no admission fee because you're just walking up a Scottish hill. The nearby holiday parks at Comrie Croft and Comrie Holiday Park Ltd are within easy reach, making this manageable as part of a wider Perthshire stay. Time your visit for decent weather. A grey, damp day on Dubh Chreag is a wasted day.
