Drummer Boy Lake

The water at Drummer Boy Lake sits surprisingly still for somewhere so close to Northampton - you half expect the urban sprawl to have ruined it, but it hasn't. It's a proper fishing lake, the kind where anglers arrive before dawn with flasks and thermoses, and the banks stay quiet enough that you might actually hear yourself think.

Walking the perimeter takes a good hour if you're not rushing, and the paths are well-maintained enough that it doesn't feel like you're hacking through undergrowth. The lake itself is the main draw here - moorhens potter about, and in decent light you get reflections that almost make it worth stopping for a photo. It's not a destination in its own right, but as a gentle interrupt on a park holiday it works well.

Families with young kids might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in; older children who actually enjoy a walk will get more from it. Serious walkers won't be challenged, but that's rather the point - sometimes you want uncomplicated countryside five miles from a town centre.

The glamping sites scattered around - Lakeview is closest at just over four miles - make this a natural fit for a longer stay in the area. You could easily combine a morning here with exploring Northampton proper, or treat it as your evening walk after a day elsewhere. No fuss, no entrance fees that I'm aware of, just a lake that does what it says on the tin.
