Site of Manor House (Earthworks)

What you're looking at here are the earthwork remains of a medieval manor house - basically lumps and bumps in a field that once formed the foundations and defensive ditches of someone's fairly substantial home. It's the kind of thing that requires a bit of imagination to picture, but if you've got even a passing interest in how medieval landowners lived, it's worth the detour from Northampton.

The site itself is unassuming - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the physical evidence of domestic life several centuries back. You'll be looking at raised platforms where buildings once stood and the shallow depressions of what were probably moats or substantial ditches. On a decent day with low sun, the earthworks cast shadows that make the layout clearer than they would otherwise.

This is genuinely for archaeology enthusiasts and serious local history types rather than a family day out. Kids will likely exhaust themselves in about twenty minutes. You don't need much time - thirty minutes to an hour covers it properly, assuming you want to walk round and get a proper sense of the layout rather than just standing at the edge.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Lakeview Caravan Park is closest at 3.4 miles - it's a reasonable walk or a brief drive from your base. It won't compete with the bigger attractions around Northamptonshire, but paired with Althorp House or the town itself, it adds a layer to understanding how the landscape was actually settled and used.
