Brixworth Country Park

The lake sits at the heart of this country park just outside Northampton, ringed by woodland that actually feels removed from the town despite being minutes away. You get water views, woodland walks, and open grassy spaces - the sort of place where a couple of hours disappears without you noticing.

It's decent for families with younger kids. The paths are manageable, there's water to look at, and enough space to let them run about without worry. Walkers will find the woodland circuits pleasant rather than challenging - nothing steep or dramatic, just steady ground underfoot. If you're after serious views or dramatic landscapes, this won't move you. It's more about quiet time than spectacle.

The practical side: it's free to enter, which matters. Parking seems straightforward, though I'd arrive earlier in the day during decent weather when spots fill up. Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper loop rather than a quick circuit.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Moon Valley Glamping or Sandy Hill Farm are closest at under three miles - this is an easy add-on. Sywell Country Park and Billing Aquadrome are further out but offer more varied facilities if you want that, though Brixworth is the quieter option. Good for breaking up a park-based holiday without needing a full day out. Bring a flask, bring the dog if you've got one, and expect pleasant rather than extraordinary.
